BG Seniors Megan Gormley and Hannah Lambert, along with Junior Lauren Glew were named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team on Wednesday.

410 women golfers were awarded this honor by maintaining a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade-point average.  The student-athletes must also have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II & III) of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the season.

The Falcon award winners maintain a minimum 3.57 GPA, and the three competed in all 29 rounds this past season.

This is Glew's second year being named to the All-American Scholar team.

It's July 1, and we all know what that means. That's right, it's Canada Day.

BGSU hockey coach Scott Paluch is stepping down after seven seasons behind the bench and compiling a record of 84-156-23 record only finishing with one season at .500 (2004-05, BG went 16-16-4).

Assistant coach Dennis Williams was named interim head coach.

Paluch is leaving the program after taking a a job with USA Hockey as a regional manager for USA's Hockey New Development Model, a program designed with the intention to create a national state of the game by connecting local hockey associations.

"It's exciting working with USA Hockey, It's something I'm really looking forward to," Paluch said in an 11 a.m. press conference at the BGSU Ice Arena. "I've had some great moments with them as a player and coach, and I'm excited to be moving on."

Paluch will be remaining in his home at Bowling Green with his new position which made the decision much easier.

This resignation likely ends Paluch's ties with the program, before his seven-season coaching stint he was an All-American defenseman for the Falcons during his collegiate career (1984-88).

Williams played for BGSU from 1997-2001 and was a volunteer assistant coach for the 2001-02 season and an assistant coach last season.

"I want to thank Scott Paluch for giving me the opportunity to return to Bowling Green and the [Central Collegiate Hockey Association]," Williams said. "I am looking forward to having the opportunity to lead the Falcons for the 2009-2010 season. As an alumnus, it is a great honor to be able to coach at your alma mater. I am very excited about the challenge and I would like to thank Greg Christopher for providing me with this opportunity."

His coaching resume also includes the resurrection of Division III Neumann College taking them from a 3-21-1 mark the season before he took over (2002-03) and compiling a record of 35-32-8 during his three season tenure. The season after Williams left, Neumann won the Division III National Title.

The search for Williams' two assistants is already in progress.
BG's women's basketball team will host Chicago State in the first round of the 2009 Preseason WNIT on Nov. 13.

This is the second appearance in the preseason tournament, and the first since the Falcons lost 89-41 to Ohio State in November of 2004. In the WNIT every team will be guaranteed three games with first and second round losers moving into a consolation bracket.

Every game of the tournament is hosted by a school, so it is not yet determined how many games the Falcons will have in Anderson Arena. The Falcons got a considerably easy first-round draw as they're one of nine teams entering the tournament with 20 or more wins from the 2008-09 season.

If the Falcons win, they will face either Ohio State or Eastern Illinois in the second round on either Nov. 15 or 16 at a site to be determined. Both teams had over 20 wins last season.

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.

Danielle Havel will be joining the Falcons after deciding to transfer to BG from DePaul, women's basketball coach Curt Miller announced today.

"Danielle will be a tremendous addition to BGSU and our basketball family," Miller said. "She is an outstanding player with the versatility to play three positions for the Falcons. Danielle is a proven winner, a productive rebounder, and has a high basketball IQ."

She will have three years of eligibility for the Falcons, starting in the 2010-11 season.

Havel is a 6'2" forward and played in 28 games off the bench for DePaul last season as a freshmen. At the end of the season, she was named co-Most Improved Player award.

DePaul went 23-10 and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament, losing to San Diego State in the first round. Havel played 19 minutes in that game, grabbing five rebounds (including three on the offensive end) and making one steal. She was 0-for-2 shooting.

On the season, Havel led her team in rebounding four times, and her rebounding ability should immediately help the Falcons in their biggest area of struggle from last season once she takes the court.

Havel was Miller's top power forward recruit in 2008 because of her great play and great character, and now that he has her, Miller expects big things out of her.

"Danielle has a chance to make a huge impact in our conference," Miller said.

Miller later gave more praise to Havel on Twitter: "Don't let [freshman] stats fool you..she can play [and] will make an impact in MAC."

Incoming freshman Chrissy Steffen and Havel were teammates at Carmel High School in Indiana and both were on the 2008 IHSAA Class 4A state championship team; Havel recorded a double-double in that game and was awarded the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award.

But that isn't the only BG connection for Havel. Her cousin, Madeline Means, played volleyball for the Falcons from 2004-2007.

Check back throughout the day for more information regarding Havel's transfer.

Jordan Samuel-Thomas - an incoming freshman for the 2009-10 hockey season - was the 22nd pick of the seventh round (203rd overall) by the Atlanta Thrashers in today's NHL draft.

A 6'3", 198 pound left wing, Samuel-Thomas played the last two season with Waterloo of the United States Hockey League (USHL). At Waterloo, the winger contributed 40 goals and 25 assist in 115 games during his two season tenure. A native of Hartford, Conn., Samuel-Thomas was ranked the 190th best North American skater in the draft, and reached as high as 179th at the mid-point of the NHL season.

This will make two current Falcons who have been drafted to the NHL, projected starting goalie Nick Eno was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the seventh round of the 2007 NHL draft. Dating back to 1969, 66 Falcon players have been drafted.

Coach Chuck Kyle will lead No. 2 seed Team USA against France and coach Oliver Moret, who took third in the 2008 European Junior Championships.

"We are very proud of Jordon to be selected to USA Football's Junior National Team," coach Dave Clawson said when Roussos was named to the team earlier this year. "He is the type of person and student-athlete who will represent our country well this summer and BGSU over the next four years of his playing career."

If Team USA is able to beat France tomorrow, they will play the winner of Mexico vs. Sweden (tomorrow at 4 p.m.) on Wednesday, July 1 at 7 p.m.

The Championship Game will be Sunday July 5 at 1 p.m.

B.J. Mullens - who played one season at Ohio State - was the only player in the 2009 NBA Draft who played against the Falcons in the 2008-09 season.

Mullens - who was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the 24th overall pick - scored just two points and had one rebound in Ohio State's narrow 61-57 win over the Falcons on Nov. 24.

The 7'1" 258 pound freshmen center averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Buckeyes and netted a double-double against Northwestern.

There were no MAC players selected in the 2009 Draft. Northern Illinois' Jake Anderson withdrew his name from the draft on June 15 to return for his junior season.
