Movable Type's Custom Fields have two glaring shortcomings. There are no check box groups, and there is no way to search them without a third party plugin. Luckily Dan Wolfgang has a plugin called More Custom Fields that fixes problem number one. I have found a solution for problem number two, but have yet to try it out.
We are using More Custom Fields extensively in our BG Views Guides, currently our Housing Guide which I have recently posted about here and here, and our Business Directory which we will be launching for the first time in the fall.
I found a problem with 1.0 in which when you saved an entry, you could not change the options in a check box group and save the entry again - the original values would be held. Dan fixed that problem pretty quickly. Thank you Dan!
Developing our Guides would be an utter pain in the ass without this plugin, making entry creation hairy, and template coding even more spaghetti like. This plugin is a huge life saver for this project.
