Down 7-5 early, the No. 1 seed Falcons took an 8-7 lead off a 3-pointer from MAC Player of the Year Lauren Prochaska at the 17:34 mark and never looked back, increasing their lead to as high as 14 points leading to a 40-29 advantage at the break against No. 8 Miami.

BG connected on 5-of-8 shots from behind the arc in the first half and much of the credit goes to the Falcons' inside presence, which was dominated by senior Tara Breske.

Breske tallied 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting in the first half, essentially setting up an outside presence for the Falcons.

"That made our 3-ball easier because we were playing inside-out," BG coach Curt Miller said. "I'm really excited because we've looked for that all year. That was a big difference in the game."
The second half was much of the same story for the Falcons, as 8-of-12 3-pointers coupled with 26 points in the paint propelled the Falcons to a 33-point win.

Breske was named the player of the game, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-15 from the field in 24 minutes of work. She also was active on the rebounding end grabbing six.

Breske was just one of four Falcons to finish in double-figures, as Prochaska, Tamika Nurse and Jen Uhl posted 15, 14 and 11 points, respectively. As a team, BG shot 50 percent (36-for-72) from the field, including 13 from long distance.

"When we have a balanced attack inside and outside it leads to good results," Breske said.

For the RedHawks, Kirsten Olowinski led the way with a team-high 16 points, while MAC Freshman of the Year Courtney Osborn struggled to find her shot, finishing with 10 points on just 4-of-15 from the field.

BG held Miami to a dismal 36 percent (23-for-64) from the field, and as good as the Falcons have been this season, Wednesday's matchup with the RedHawks was one of their best.

"That's as good as we've played all year," Miller said.

Fifteen players saw action for the Falcons against Miami, including four freshmen. Jessie Tamerlano, Allison Papenfuss, Chrissy Steffen and Simone Eli combined for 23 minutes on the floor.

With the win, the Falcons advance to the semifinals on
Friday to play No. 4 Akron, who easily took care of No. 5 Eastern Michigan 72-46 Wednesday night. BG went 2-0 against the Zips during the regular season.
(from bgsufalcons.com)

A day after teammate Kyle Page signed to play with the Toledo Walleye (ECHL) it was announced that another BGSU Falcon would get his shot at playing professional hockey. Kai Kantola had signed a Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO) with the Norfolk Tide, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.

Kantola comes off a senior campaign where he scored 12 points (5g, 7a) for the Falcons. Of his five goals, three were scored on the power play. As the season progressed, Kantola improved in the goal scoring column having scored four of his five goals from Jan. 3 on. All of his goals this season were scored in games decided by one goal or less. He had his most consistent stretch of games scoring a point in four straight matches between Nov. 6 and Nov. 14 (1-3--4) including a goal against Ferris State (Nov. 7) in a 3-2 loss. Against the then No.1 Miami RedHawks, Kantola posted his tenth multiple point game when he scored a power-play goal and an assist in a 3-2 Falcon loss. He also blocked a career-high 14 shots this season.

After the signing was confirmed, BGSU Falcons interim head coach Dennis Williams said, "Kai has always kept his feet moving and moves the puck well. He has got some great size and speed and with all that together, he can definitely use that to his advantage moving on as a professional hockey player."

Kantola finished his career with Bowling Green recording an assist in the team's 6-1 loss to Nebraska-Omaha in the finale game of the CCHA Tournament's first round action between the Falcons and the Mavericks. He leaves Bowling Green having played in 135 games, scored 28 goals, 26 assists (54 points) and notched 13 power-play goals over his four year career.

After Kantola's signing, the Falcons have now sent two of its seniors of to play or tryout for a professional team. Yesterday, Kyle Page signed with the nearby Toledo Walleye of the ECHL and is expected to be in action in the team's game in Trenton, N.J. for the Walleye's game against the Devils.

"It's nice from our stand point (BGSU) to see us prepare players for their professional careers and its great to see people interested in our players," said Williams. "They both certainly deserve it."

Obviously since we are a college publication we don't get any say in the Mid-American Conference postseason awards for any sport.

But if I did have a ballot for the men's and women's three biggest postseason awards, here is what it would have looked like.

Men's Player of the Year
*David Kool, Western Michigan

Kool was easily the best all-around player in the MAC this season. He led the league in scoring and came through in the clutch when his team needed him most, as the Falcons learned first-hand in the first-round of the MAC Tournament.

Men's Coach of the Year
*Geno Ford, Kent State

Had the Flashes not won the regular-season finale against Akron to win the MAC title, Ford would not have won this award for real nor would he appear on my ballot. It would have been Akron's Keith Dambrot instead. Miami's Charlie Coles is also a viable option here because he turned his team around quite well, but he didn't factor into the real balloting or my own.

Men's Freshman of the Year
*D.J. Cooper, Ohio

Cooper led all rookies in scoring, assists and rebounding. In addition, he led the league in steals per game. Clearly the best rookie this season, Cooper likely will have a Player of the Year award in his trophy case before his career is finished.

Click continued to see my picks for the women's awards.
Women's Player of the Year
*Kourtney Brown, Buffalo

Lauren Prochaska from BG won the award for real and is also a deserving player.
Although Buffalo was a painfully awful team this season, they would
have been beyond painfully awful without Brown's double-double per
game. Meanwhile, without Prochaska, the Falcons probably would still
have a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament and a good chance of
winning it all. Therefore, Brown was more valuable to her team no matter how insignificant they were.

Women's Coach of the Year
*Curt Miller, Bowling Green

Akron's Jodi Kest won the award, and there is no reason she should not
have given her record-breaking campaign. In reality though, the award
is virtually a coinflip between her and Miller. My coin just happens to
land with Miller, as he led the Falcons to another regular-season MAC
title doing so after losing his top defender and incorporating a
transfer student into his starting five.

Women's Freshman of the Year
*Courtney Osborn, Miami

There were very few rookies that made an impact on the women's game
this season. Of them, Osborn and Akron's Rachel Tecca were the head of
the class, but Osborn's numbers clearly stood above Tecca's this
season. Watching these two play head-to-head for the next three seasons will
be a treat for MAC women's basketball fans.

Any serious Falcon men's basketball fan is familiar with the year 1968, as that is the last year BG appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

Coached by the legendary Bill Fitch, the 1967-68 club finished 18-7 (10-2 Mid-American Conference) and narrowly lost to Marquette in Kent during the first-round of the NCAA Tournament on New Year's Day.

The 1967-68 squad's defining win was an 85-76 victory against Toledo. They
also won at Syracuse 87-81 and beat Virginia 76-72 in the Marshall
Tournament. However, both schools were sub-.500 that season.

But most importantly, the Falcons won the MAC championship, which earned them an automatic bid the Big Dance.

Led by Walt Piatkowski's 27 points, the Falcons fought back from a 39-34 halftime deficit but were unable to stop George Thompson - who had a double-double with 33 points and 10 rebounds - and Marquette, which squeaked by with a 72-71 win.

Captain Al Hairston (18) and Carl Assenheimer (10) were the only other Falcons to score in double-digits. Al Dixon led the team with 10 rebounds.

And that was it.
In the 42 seasons that have passed, there have been many other great
wins, great players and great moments, but there
has not been another NCAA Tournament berth.

The Falcons won MAC
championships in 1981, 1983, 1997, 2000 and 2009, but they were unable
to win the MAC Tournament in any of those years, losing at various
stages of the tournament each year.

*1981 - 79-72 loss to Northern Illinois in the quarterfinals
*1983 - 59-56 loss to Ohio in the championship game (in Anderson Arena)
*1997 - 73-64 loss to Eastern Michigan in the semifinals
*2000 - 58-56 overtime loss to Miami in the quarterfinals
*2009 - 63-55 loss to Akron in the semifinals

In
addition, the Falcons lost two other MAC championship games - a 70-59
loss to Kent State in 2002 and an 85-70 loss to Toledo in 1980.

All those failures have placed Bowling Green on a rather dubious list of institutions.

BG
is tied with Columbia for the fifth longest NCAA Tournament drought.
Those schools are "bested" - or perhaps "worsted" would be a better
word choice - by Tennessee Tech (1963), Yale (1962), Dartmouth (1959)
and Harvard (1946). All of those streaks will also continue this year.

There
are several other schools facing longer droughts (such as Wayne State
and Tufts College), but they have since dropped below NCAA Division I
and can no longer earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. And there are a
handful schools who have been Division I since before 1968 and never
made the tournament.

But no matter how you slice it, BG's drought is still pretty brutal.

So how does this happen? It's hard to say, as there are seemingly
endless possibilities. I have spotlighted three of the prominent
possibilities below.

Is it coaching?

The past four
coaches for the Falcons have all had at least one opportunity to lead
the Falcons to the NCAA Tournament with John Weinert being the only one
to come close (in 1983). He also had chances in 1980 and 1981 but came
up short. Jim Larranaga (1986-1997) finished his tenure as Falcons
coach with a MAC title and three NIT appearances but no NCAA Tournament
berths. He was followed by Dan Dakich (1997-2007), who couldn't get the
Falcons over the hump either, despite a 24-9 record during the 2001-02
season and a MAC title in 1999-00. Current coach Louis Orr won a MAC
title last season, but once again, the Falcons were unable to turn
their No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament into a low seed in the NCAA
Tournament. Has the University just not found the right guy to put the
team over the top? It would seem so except that Larranaga had some
major success with George Mason after he left the Falcons.

Is it because the Falcons are a mid-major?

While
mid-majors are automatically at a disadvantage when trying to earn NCAA
Tournament bids, at least one team from the MAC is represented in the
Big Dance every season. Every team in the MAC - except Buffalo which
did not rejoin Division I until the 1991-92 season - has made at least
one NCAA Tournament since 1980. Can it be said that the Falcons'
drought is strictly because they are at a deficit when it comes to
earning a bid? I think not.

Is it because the Falcons have a tough time recruiting star players?

Recruiting
probably has a little bit to do with the Falcons' struggles, but they
still have

produced NBA players (Antonio Daniels, pictured, and Keith McLeod)
recently. During the past decade, the Falcons have been at best the
eighth choice of teams in the state (trailing behind Ohio State,
Xavier, Cincinnati, Dayton, Kent State, Akron and Miami). Ohio, Toledo
and Cleveland State are also viable schools for a recruit to choose.
Teams from the surrounding states also can draw Ohio players. Not to say that men's and women's basketball can be compared apples to
apples, but if BG's women's team can be so dominant in recruiting,
what's to say the men's side can find similar "under-the-radar" players?

While
it is has been awhile since the Falcons got into the Big Dance, it is
not something that is going to last forever. I can't imagine the
Falcons becoming the Chicago Cubs of NCAA basketball.

Will they go next season? I doubt it.

Will
they go the season after that (when Scott Thomas and Dee Brown are
seniors)? It certainly seems like they will have a chance.

What do you think has kept the Falcons out of the NCAA Tournament for so long?

Western Michigan senior David Kool was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Kent State coach Geno Ford was named MAC Coach of the Year this morning by the league.

Kool led the MAC in scoring this season with 21.9 points per conference game for the seventh-seeded Broncos, who will face second-seeded Central Michigan in second-round MAC Tournament action at noon on Thursday.

This season, Kool moved into first place on Western Michigan's all-time scoring list (2.037 points). His total also ranks 10th all-time in the history of the MAC.

"It is a very
special feeling to be MAC Player of the Year," Kool said. "It's a great
honor, and I couldn't do without the help of my teammates and the
coaches. This is more than an individual award, it's a credit to
everyone in our program. It's a complete honor, and I'm very humbled."
Kool received 13 of the 24 votes besting Kent State's Chris Singletary (6)
and Justin Greene (2), Eastern Michigan's Carlos Medlock (1), Northern
Illinois' Xavier Silas (1) and Buffalo's Rodney Pierce (1).

Ford - in his second season with Kent State - led the Flashes to 23
wins, the top seed in the MAC Tournament and a regular season MAC championship after winning at Akron in
the league's final regular season game.

"This is an award that obviously a lot of people have had a hand in,"
Ford said. "[Associate head coach] Rob Senderoff has done a tremendous
job with our offense,
[assistant coaches] Armon Gates and Bobby Steinburg were instrumental
with our defense and
[director of basketball operations] Jaden Uken was outstanding with our
daily preparation for practice and
games. You have to credit our accomplishments this season to the
players who performed at a high level and shared that one vision
required for a team to be great."

Ford is the fifth Kent State coach to win the award, and KSU has won the award five times since 2000.

Like Kool, Ford also received 13 of 24 votes, with Akron's Keith Dambrot (10) and Ball State's Billy Taylor (1) trailing him.

In somewhat of a surprise, neither Miami's Charlie Coles or Central Michigan's Ernie Ziegler received any votes.
Frank Compagnone had three hits and two RBI, including an RBI double in the fourth inning.

The Falcons jumped early on the Huskies, scoring three runs in the top of the first off starter Drew Leenhouts. The Huskies struck back, scoring two of their own runs by smacking four hits in the inning.

Northeastern took the lead in the third inning, scoring two more runs by capitalizing on a throwing error and adding one on Jason Roth's RBI single.

With the Huskies ahead 7-6 by virtue of a two-RBI single from Pastyrnak, Bowling Green posted four runs in the top of the seventh to go up 10-7. Pastyrnak knocked in another run to make the score 10-8, but Bowling Green kept pouring on runs, scoring two in the eighth and one in the ninth.

        UPDATE: 6:05 p.m.

Scott Thomas' 23 points and the Falcons' 59.2 percent shooting effort was not enough today, as Western Michigan downed BG 75-73 in the first-round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

In a back-and-forth game that did not see either team lead by more than five points during the second half, the seventh-seeded Broncos were able to come out on top after a strong second half by senior David Kool, who scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half.

Tenth-seeded BG held an early 8-0 lead, but a 10-4 WMU run cut that lead midway through the first half. But the Falcons would follow that with a 13-5 run of their own to take a 25-15 lead, the largest of the game.

The Broncos fought back the rest of the half, cutting the lead to one at halftime, 39-38.

Both teams seemed to trade baskets for the rest of the game, as Thomas and Kool took over most the scoring before the Broncos slowly pulled away in the final five minutes of the game.
But, freshman Luke Kraus - who started for the Falcons - gave the
Falcons a sliver of hope with 14 seconds as he was fouled shooting a
3-pointer and converted two of his three shots to cut WMU's lead to three.

After Kool missed the first of a 1-and-1 for the Broncos at the other end, Kraus
missed a deep 3-pointer for the Falcons and the ball went out of bounds.

Two free throws by Mike Douglas after a quick foul gave the Broncos a 5-point lead.
Jakubowski hit a 3-pointer at the other end with 0.6 seconds left, but there was no chance the Falcons could foul after the shot.

The Broncos only shot 46.3 percent from the floor, but they made up for their misses at the free-throw line, netting 16-of-18 attempts. The Falcons made just 7-of-12.

Senior Marc Larson finished his Falcon career strongly, earning a start and finishing with his first career double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds). Otis Polk (eight points, two rebounds, one block) and Erik Marschall (four points, one rebound, one steal) also played their final games for BG.

The Falcons finish the season 14-16 (6-11 MAC) while the Broncos improve to 17-14 (9-8 MAC).

Western Michigan will face MAC West champion Central Michigan at noon on Thursday.
It would be intriguing if they put it together for a MAC Tournament

The Falcons did not finish the season well at all. Facing David Kool

themselves better for next season's tourney.
though Buffalo was not able to escape the basement of the MAC, Brown
may find herself named the best player in the conference. Averaging a
double-double per conference game (19.2 ppg and 11.6 rpg), Brown
clearly has the best stats among all players.

2. Marke Freeman, Northern Illinois

Freeman
finished third in the league in scoring with 18.8 points per conference
game, but she was also effective on the defensive end, earning 2.5
steals per game.

3. Lauren Prochaska, Bowling Green

The
defending MAC Player of the Year continued her strong play for the
Falcons, leading them to the regular season championship. However, her
conference stats (17.4 ppg and 5.4 rpg) aren't as impressive as other
players in the league this season.

4. Tavelyn James, Eastern Michigan

Key to the Eagles' offensive success, James led the MAC in scoring with 20.6 points per conference game.

Others to be considered: Tanika Mays, Emily Maggert

Men's Coach of the Year

1. Geno Ford, Kent State

Ford
led the Flashes to a regular season title in a season-long dogfight
with Akron. The Flashes could easily have lost the title, but Ford made
sure they played well when they needed to.

2. Keith Dambrot, Akron

The runner-up to Kent State, Dambrot still led his team to a respectable finish after winning the MAC Tournament in 2009.

3. Ernie Zeigler, Central Michigan

Zeigler led the Chippewas to a MAC West title, improving last season's conference record by two games.

Women's Coach of the Year

1. Curt Miller, Bowling Green

The Falcons head man won another regular season title, which should give Miller his sixth straight Coach of the Year award.

2. AnnMarie Gilbert, Eastern Michigan

Gilbert
led a resurgent team to a 21-7 season after finishing just 8-21 last
season. Despite an 11-5 conference record, the Eagles are still the No.
5 seed in the tournament.

3. Tricia Cullop, Toledo

Cullop led Toledo to a MAC West championship, but he likely won't be garnering too much consideration for this award.

Men's Freshman of the Year

1. D.J. Cooper, Ohio

The
runaway favorite for the award, Cooper led freshmen in points (15.1),
rebounds (6.1), assists (6.25) and steals (2.69) per conference game.

2. Jake Barnett, Toledo

Barnett averaged 11.9 points per conference game and had 4.2 rebounds per game all season.

3. Jauwan Scaife, Northern Illinois

Scaife was third among rookies in scoring with 10.2 points per game.

Women's Freshman of the Year

1. Courtney Osborn, Miami

With
limited competition for the award, Osborn seems to be the favorite
after averaging 14.5 points and 4.19 assists per conference game.

2. Rachel Tecca, Akron

Tecca averaged 10.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per conference game.

**Gene Cross was erroneously listed as Toledo's women's basketball coach in the first draft of this article. Cross is Toledo's men's coach, and Tricia Cullop has been correctly identified as the women's coach**
